Connections in our brains

Today we focused again on our behaviours for learning (particularly perseverance) and growth mindset. We learnt more about how the brain works and watched a video about how we learn and make connections in our brains.

Our challenge this week was to work as a team to make a free-standing tower that was at least one metre tall. We really had to persevere! We used our growth mindset talk to help us keep going.

In the end none of the groups quite managed to meet the challenge but every group had a good idea and made a good start. Next week we are going to try to put all those good ideas together and see if we can persevere and succeed.

In our Computing and Maths lessons this week we have been learning all about data. We have made pictograms, block graphs and today we stared to use databases. We learnt that databases are a useful tool for sorting information in different ways.

We practised using a database by searching for information in different ways. We had a set of questions about aliens to answer using the database.

We then added our own alien and practised filling in a record for it.

Collecting data

This week we are learning all about data in our Maths and Computing lessons. This afternoon we used 2Count on Purple Mash to make our own graphs. We collected data on eye colour as a class and discovered the most popular eye colour in our class in blue and the least popular is grey.

We then collected data about the roll of a dice. We had to roll the dice 20 times and use this to create a graph to find out which was the most popular number to roll. We all created our graphs but when we compared them we found that there wasn’t a common answer to this question. Everyone had different result so the roll of a dice really is random!

School council elections

Today we held our School Council elections. Everyone who wanted to be a school councillor had to stand at the front and make a speech. They had to convince the class to vote for them by explaining why they would be a good school councillor. We then did a secret ballot to find the winner, just like in a real election. Everyone had two votes – one for a girl and one for a boy. Miss Williams then collected them up and called out who each vote was for. Each child then counted their votes and we found our winners.

Well done Shona and Mason – you are now our school councillors for this year. We trust you will do a good job for us!

Discussing our value word – appreciation

Today for our class assembly we focused on our value word of appreciation. We have already thought about the people we appreciate like our friends, teachers and families. Today we focused on what we should take the time to appreciate about our world. We listened to a song called ‘What a wonderful world’ and looked at some beautiful images of the wonderful world we live in. We decided we sometimes take our world for granted but there is much to appreciate. We all decided we would take a moment before tomorrow’s check-out to find something new to appreciate so we can share ideas together.

New song: “I Wanna Play in a Band”

Today in Music we started to learn a new song called I Wanna Play in a Band. We started the lesson listening to Queen’s We Will Rock You. We could barely keep still! We were clapping and moving and some of us were even singing. This is rock music which is the same style as the one we are learning.

We learnt to sin the song, played our imaginary instruments and even started to improvise by making up our own verses. We had excellent ideas! We are going to learnt to play the glockenspiel parts and then will add a video so keep checking the blog.

Different communities

During PSHE, we discussed what a neighbour was and talked about the different communities we belong to.

The children knew a lot about their different communities such as where they live, in school, clubs they attend and within their families.

We talked about neighbours in these communities too.

Some of the children explained that their parents help people in the community because they have no one else to help them. These parents are carers and nurses.

Line symmetry

In Maths we have been learning about shape. Before Christmas we focused on pattern and naming and describing 2D shapes.

This week we have been learning about line symmetry. We learnt how to use a mirror to find out whether a shape was symmetrical and then as we improved we tried to find out how many lines of symmetry a shape had.

We also practised using the peg boards to make symmetrical patterns.

Growth Mindset

Our new behaviour for learning to focus on this term is perseverance. We discussed what it means and the importance of it. We have a poster in our classroom that defines it as ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.’ We could all relate this to times we had struggled but then been successful.

This linked nicely to something new we were learning about – a growth mindset. Miss Williams showed us a picture of an origami penguin and gave us a piece of paper. She asked us to make it. We had no instructions or help and really no idea where to start! These were some of the comments we made as we worked:

Is that right?
It’s really hard!
I think it goes there. What do you think?
This is so hard. I’ll never do it!
Oh dear. It doesn’t look very much like a penguin.
It’s too hard.
I’m struggling.
I think I’ve done the best I can.
This is my best try.

None of us managed to make a penguin.

We then started to learn about how our brain works! It was very interesting to find out that scientists have proven that with a ‘growth mindset’ anyone can achieve. We learnt that people who think they can do something and are willing to try then fail will be more likely to succeed than people who think they cannot do something. We looked back at the comments we had made and tried to figure out which ones showed a growth mindset and which ones didn’t.

We then read a quote from the famous basketball player Michael Jordan:

We decided that with instructions and a bit of help and practise we might be able to get better at making an origami penguin. We realised this is also how we learn in school. We tried again and some of us were successful. Most of us had got better but it still wasn’t quite right. BUT we told ourselves ‘I can’t do it… YET!’ We are going to try and be more positive with what we tell ourselves when we have challenging times in class and we are also going to keep practising that origami penguin until we can do it.

An exciting discovery!

We started our new year with a very exciting discovery because outside our classroom this morning there was a tent! We had no idea why or what it was doing there so we decided the only way to find out was to explore it for ourselves. We put our coats on and went outside and inside the tent we found a letter, a backpack and a bag.

Everyone was very excited to read the letter. It said:

We were then super-excited to try and find out who PP was and what film he was talking about. It was very chilly outside (Esmay told us it was minus two degrees!) so we took our findings inside to explore them further. We looked through the bag together and the more things we found the more we were convinced PP was definitely an explorer of some sort. He had some warm gloves, a hat, a woolly scarf, a compass, a clock, a torch, some snacks and lots of other things that suggested he explored in cold places. We then found a memory stick which had the film he spoke about in his letter. We watched it and discovered that PP was actually Professor Pole who is a nature explorer. He said it was minus 28 degrees in the North Pole today – BRR!

He told us he explores all over the North Pole and is particularly interested in polar bears. He asked for our help with 3 things which we are interested to find out more about:.

1: What animals live in the North Pole?
2. What are the landscape and climate like?
3. How do people survive in the North Pole?

He has left his things with us while he explores further and left us a lovely bag of fiction and non-fiction books too. We have put them in our role-play area so we can practice being explorers too! We will keep you informed about how we get on with our research.
