Instruction Writing

Toucans are now familiar with the features of instruction writing. They have a title, sub-titles, bullet points or numbered lists. They use imperative verbs and some adverbs.

Today we started our new writing project. First we discussed what is the correct way to brush out teeth.

We then worked in pairs listening and giving instructions on how to brush your teeth.

We look forward to putting our ideas onto pen and paper this week.

Science Investigation!

This half term the children have been learning about how to have a healthy lifestyle. Today the children completed an experiment using various crisps. The aim of the experiment was to establish which crisps had the highest fat content – we did this by crushing four different types of crisps on paper towels which in turn were on graph paper. Toucans had to count how many squares on their graph paper contained grease once crushed. They filled out their results on a table and then presented them on a bar chart.

Numbots

In Maths we have explored how numbots can help us review our mental arithmetic and other math skills.

We can access numbots through Wonde. If you are using an Ipad and find you can’t open up the app then you can use numbots by

1. Loading up numbots using the web address http://play.numbots.com

2. Going into settings then safari and disabling block pop-ups. This will allow you to open numbots through wonde.

3. Download the official numbots app for free via the Apple app store, Google play or Amazon App store.

Buddy Zone!

In today’s class assembly Toucan’s talked about the ChildLine website. There is so much to do on the Childline website. Have you seen all the amazing games we have? There’s Tower of Confidence where you can build your very own tower all the way up to the moon. In Build Your Happy Place you get to design your dream room. Mine has loads of chocolate fountains and mirror balls in it.

At home why not try the activities.

Finally, we talked about how we can get help. If something is making you feel upset or worried, it’s always good to talk to an adult you feel safe with.

It can help to tell them how you feel and what’s happening, even if you’re not sure if it’s wrong.

Mary Seacole

Today we had a special lesson about respecting others and celebrating diversity. To begin the lesson Mr Lo told us how he was so happy we showed respect to others and celebrated that we were all unique.

We then learnt about Mary Seacole.  we have listened to her story of how she, like Florence Nightingale, travelled so far to the Crimea to help many soldiers. Mary Seacole, unlike Florence, had to use her own money and was not allowed to open a hospital. She was both clever and smart as she opened the hospital by calling it a hotel. Her hospital was set up very close to where the fighting was.

All us felt it was wrong for Mary to be treated unfairly and that she was so heroic in using her own money to go and help them. We also decided it was unfair to be judged by the colour of your skin and are very glad at how wonderful our class is as we have all unique children.

Look at us working on our activity to learn more about Mary Seacole’s life .

Features of instruction writing

In English we have been learning about imperative verbs (bossy verbs)

How many imperative verbs can you spot in the video below?

We also looked at existing instructions to identify the features. Some of us even spotted features that were on some but missing on others! Excellent spotting!

Finally as a class we came up with our own success criteria on how to write instructions.
