On Friday 17th June Y2 went on an amazing trip to the zoo! The weather was beautiful – the sun shone all day long for us. We had a special lesson in the classroom first linked to our topic about rainforests. We made our own rainforest and put in the animals that live there.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the tapirs as their enclosure is being moved. However, we did get to see all the different sorts of monkeys we have been learning about in our rainforest topic.
We also saw meerkats, penguins, tigers, rhinos, giraffes and many more animals!
We had a picnic under a shady tree at lunchtime which we really enjoyed.
In the afternoon we went on a Gruffalo hunt! It was amazing! We heard the story of the Gruffalo and even met some of the animals in it too.
We were very tired out on the coach home. Some of us even managed a sneaky little nap! What a wonderful day we had!
Toucans are continuing their exploration of the Earth’s Polar Regions. In recent lessons they have been finding out how people live there. They had to imagine how they would travel to the Polar Regions and what they would see.
We talked about what the differences might be between the UK and the Polar Regions. The Toucans then looked at some information about the Inuit people and their life and work in the Artic.
Year 2 found out that no one lives permanently in Antartica as the weather is far too extreme. There are scientists and explorers that work there for part of the year to gain important information for us to find out more of this beautiful continent.
Toucans have now finished their clay coil pots by making them colourful with paint. Do you like our creations? Which one is your

Toucans (and Mrs Parry!) loved learning about some Polar animals in the live lesson today. They found out how the animals are suited to the habitat they live in to help them survive. We especially focused on Polar Bears who live in the Arctic and Penguins who live in the Antarctic.
Karly got straight to work with her follow up task. She is becoming an expert in our new topic!
Here are a few links to watch.

Year 2 are busy becoming experts in the Polar Regions this week. They have learnt about the different climate zones of the world. They discovered the hottest countries are nearest to the Equator, whilst the Polar regions are furthest away. Toucans have been busy using the Met Office website to compare UK temperatures to the Arctic (North Pole) regions. They also found out that Antarctica (South Pole) is the coldest place on Earth. Here is the follow up task that Toucans completed after they had taken part in their “Live Lesson” – Well done Isla – this is a fantastic piece of work – very accurate and neat!

Toucans have been enjoying looking at atlases and learning how to use them efficiently, by referring to the contents page. They also looked at a globe and discovered we are quite a small country!
They found out the names of the countries using an atlas and were successful in labelling a blank map. Afterwards, the children located the capital cities of each country for an extra challenge. Quite a few children already knew the capital city of England (and the UK) is London. They recognised some London landmarks such as Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace whilst looking at some photos. Great work Toucans!

Today we had our final Geography lesson where we learnt lots more facts about the north and south poles. We are very excited to start writing our letters to Professor Pole tomorrow!

This week we have been enjoying learning all about the world in our Geography lessons. We have spent time learning about globes, maps and atlases. We enjoyed exploring the new atlases for ourselves. We used the index to find different countries and label them on maps.
We are learning about the continents and oceans of the world too. Maybe you can test us!

Today we started our first Geography topic. We are going to be learning all about where in the world our food comes from. We had a look at a globe, map and atlas and discussed what we already knew about the world. We then had an opportunity to explore the atlases for ourselves. They were wonderful! We are really looking forward to learning more.

In our Geography lesson today we learnt some more facts about the rainforest. We are becoming very knowledgable! We then researched more facts for ourselves in books and using Swiggle (a safe search engine for children) on the internet. We had to make sure we understood the facts before we recorded them.
Today Toucans visited the North Pole and the South Pole! Have a look at our video and see what we found out..
Of course we never really visited the Poles – they are too far away and too cold! In our Computing lessons we have been learning how to search for and save images. We have also been working on our acting and presentation skills.
We made our own reports and Mr Baddhan helped us to use the green screen to make it look like we really visited the North and South Pole. Do you think we did a good job?

In our topic we have been learning about the effects of global warming on polar bears. In PSHE today we explored where our food comes from. We were amazed to find how far some of our food travels around the world! We discussed how this contributes to global warming and ways in which we could avoid this.
We have had a very busy week this week in Toucans class! We have continued with our research about the North Pole and are ready to write back to Professor Pole now. We have used atlases to find different countries in the North Pole and found out more about the temperate and landscape.
English
In English we have been reading lots of books by Hans de Beer. He has written a series of books about a character called Lars who is a little polar bear. We have enjoyed them all and made book reviews.
Maths
In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have learnt some new vocabulary including vertices and quadrilateral. We have learnt to name and describe shapes and even had a go at making shapes from nets.

This week we are starting a unit of Geography work. We started by looking at all the different maps, globes and atlases we have in our classroom. We explored different atlases in pairs and found out new facts for ourselves.
We then shared what we already knew about the UK. We practised using maps to locate and label countries and seas of the United Kingdom. Tomorrow we are going to focus on the continents and seas/oceans of the world.

We have been super busy in year 2 this half term preparing for our SATs. We have worked so hard in our normal English and Maths lessons but also had extra English and Maths lessons too. Luckily, we have still found time to do our topic of the rainforest.
We now know lots of facts and are preparing to write our own non-chronological reports next week. Today we did some final research to check we’re sure of our facts before we start to write.

In our English lessons we are really focusing on improving our handwriting. BUT – not just in English, in every lesson! Today in Geography we wrote postcards as if we were in the Amazon rainforest. We focused on the geographical features of the rainforest and how we would describe it to someone who had never been there.
We used our very nearest handwriting as we did our writing. We are very proud of our finished postcards.

This term our topic has been polar adventures. Over the term we have been creating lots of excellent work. It is finally all up on display in our classroom. Good job Toucans!
