In English we have been looking at traditional tales with a focus on Little Red Riding hood. Later in the month we will innovate our own version of the story.
Story Mapping Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there was a little girl called Little Red Riding Hood. People called her that because she wore a long red coat and a crimson hat. Early one morning her Mother said ‘Take this basket of food to your Grandmother’s house because she isn’t feeling well. Now listen, whatever you do don’t dilly dally on the way’. Into the basket she put a slice of fruit cake, a juicy apple and a large bottle of fizzy pop.
Little Red Riding Hood walked and she walked and she walked. She walked until she got to the middle of the forest. The forest was so dark she could barely see where she was going. Fortunately, after all that walking Little Red Riding Hood found a tree to rest under. Soon after, a woodcutter came and asked her ‘Where are you going?’ Unfortunately, a big, bad wolf was hiding behind a tree and listened as she explained everything. Greedily, he licked his lips, pushed his sharp claws into the ground and bounded off to Grandmother’s house.
When Little Red Riding Hood arrived at the house she let herself in with a key. Grandmother was lying in bed looking very strange. ‘Oh Grandmother, what big ears you have!’ said Little Red Riding Hood. ‘All the better to hear you with, my dear,’ replied Grandmother. ‘Oh Grandmother, what big eyes you have!’ said Little Red Riding Hood. ‘All the better to see you with, my dear,’ replied Grandmother. ‘Oh Grandmother, what big hands you have,’ said Little Red Riding Hood. ‘All the better to hug you with my dear’ replied Grandmother. ‘Oh Grandmother, what big teeth you have!’ said Little Red Riding Hood. ‘All the better to EAT you with!’ the wolf cried angrily leaping off the bed. Little Red Riding Hood screamed loudly as the wolf opened his mighty jaws.
At that moment, the woodcutter dashed through the door. He was as strong as an ox and as quick as a flash. He killed the wolf with not one, not two but three mighty blows with his axe.
Luckily, Grandmother shouted from the cupboard where the wolf had hidden her. Everyone was so relieved! Finally, Grandmother was reunited with Little Red Riding Hood. They all enjoyed the basket of food together. They never heard from the wolf again and so they lived happily ever after.
Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on retrieval in our reading lessons.

We’ve been learning about nutrition and health in science and now we’re looking at food poetry in English! Today we had lots of fun reading and appreciating food poetry.
We only had 5 minutes to practice and then had a go at performing the poems.
Today we had a whole class reading lesson. Our focus this week and the last two weeks is vocabulary. We looked at a poem and discussed the meaning of the words. The poem was written over one hundred years ago, so it has some words we were unfamiliar with. We had to read the whole sentence to try and understand the meaning.
