This week we are learning about the life cycle of a frog, from frog – frogspawn – tabpole- froglet back to a frog.

The children were very excited when they were given playdough! We went through as a class what the life cycle of a frog looked like. We spoke about how a frog begins it’s life as an egg which is known as frogspawn, then the eggs turn into a tadpole and eventually into a froglet (a tadpole with legs) and then it grows into a young frog before growing into an adult frog.

A fun fact we learned was that a frog lives for up to 10-12 years, but not many tadpoles survive to become a frog.

Sequencing in Computing

This half term in Computing our focus is on programming.

Algorithms are precise instructions. We looked at the instructions, up, up , turn right and turn left. These are the only four instructions we are giving. We then explored what would happen if we gave these instructions to our floor robots (bee-bots) but try the instructions in different ways.

We then discussed together and came to the conclusion that the order of instructions (sequencing) is very important as giving the same instructions but in different order may produce a different outcome. In our example, our Bee-bots ended in different places.

Ho Ho Ho!

This week we have started our new music unit. Ho Ho Ho is a fun Christmas song that includes rapping, improvising and dancing.

We listened to the song and discussed

What Can You Hear?
● One male and one female. Children’s voices, rapping and voices shouting out Christmas words.
● Sleigh Bells, bass guitar, trumpet, trombone, saxophone. Harmonica/synthesiser, piano and
strings.
We also had a go at singing it. We do need more practice but here is a sneek peak. We had lots of fun giving it a go.

Extension: Have a go learning the song at home

Extension: You can see an overview of this lesson below.

Continents of the world!

Year 2 Singing Continents of the world!

This half term we have started our Geography topic. Over the next two weeks we will be looking at the continents and oceans of the world . We used a range of resources including a globe, a large map and atlas. Mr Lo also demonstrated digital mapping using Digimaps to locate Druids Heath in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom!

Science Investigation!

This half term the children have been learning about how to have a healthy lifestyle. Today the children completed an experiment using various crisps. The aim of the experiment was to establish which crisps had the highest fat content – we did this by crushing four different types of crisps on paper towels which in turn were on graph paper. Toucans had to count how many squares on their graph paper contained grease once crushed. They filled out their results on a table and then presented them on a bar chart.

IT in the supermarket

Today in computing we looked at how IT is used in the wider world. We focussed on a supermarket and talked about how the supermarket checkout has a till, barcode scanner that is part of IT.

Toucans were very good at explaining what all the pieces of hardware were. Kady also pointed out that we have barcodes on books.

Did you know that barcodes are scanned using a scanner connected to a till. The number contained in the barcode is then used to look up the item. Once the item has been matched, its price will be looked up. This information comes from another computer, to which all of the tills are connected. The price is shown on a screen and added to a list of all of the things that the customer is buying.

To help us understand this we did some role play. Some of us were barcode scanners and item finders, others were price finders.

What’s the time Mr Wolf?

Mr Lo first read out a piece of writing to us. It was instructions.
We when followed the instructions

We then listened to Mr Lo read another piece of writing. This time it was telling us what we did. It was in the past tense.
Today we then talked about how instructions are written in the present tense ( now).
We reviewed our understanding of verbs by doing
Today I play, Yesterday I played!
Today I bake, Yesterday I baked!
We also discussed how some verbs are tricky.
Today I run, Yesterday I ran!

Creating a balanced meal

Toucans have been learning that there are different types of food groups and that they should be eating certain amounts of these food types in their meals. The class all made a balanced meal. Can you remember the different food groups? How much of your meal should be made up of fruit or vegetables. How often should we eat sweets and crisps?

Look at our plans here

Look at us giving it a go at creating our meals!

Now look at us showing them!

Can you spot the balanced meals?

Friday Music!

To end the day Mr Lo said we should sing with passion and really move to the music. Lots of us certainly did!

Welcome!

A lovely new start to the year with our new Toucans! I’m looking forward to an amazing journey this year and learning lots of new things with you!

On Thursday we enjoyed circle time sharing what we have enjoyed over the summer. We also had an active P.E lesson in the hall!

On Friday we had a look at our number bonds to 10.

Toucans have taken home with them a folder with some of last years work and also a booklet with the Year 1 spellings. Don’t forget to review those at home when you have time!

Trip to Twycross Zoo

On Friday 7th July Toucans enjoyed a trip to Twycross Zoo. We really had our walking shoes on as we got to see most of the animals!

When we first arrived we went to visit the meerkats and Amur leopard. We then saw the penguins and flamingos. Miss Williams challenged us to stand on one leg as flamingos do – we were actually very good at it! Next we went to see the zebras, rhinos and giraffes. We were amazed at home tall the giraffes were in real life! We also learnt a few things – contrary to previous Toucan beliefs, rhinos are herbivores not carnivores!

Next it was time for lunch and an exploration of the playground:

In the afternoon we saw the lorikeets and one landed on Mrs Parton’s hand! We then went through the gibbon forest on the way to find the Gruffalo. We had a wonderful journey through the story and then made our way to the classroom for our lesson. The teacher was very impressed with how much we knew! On our way back to the coach some of us went to see the Giant Tortoise – you can see from our faces what we thought of it!

What a wonderful day we had!

Here we are demonstrating our best animal noises!

Online Safety – Rules at home and at school

Today, Year 2 discussed rules to help keep us happy, healthy and safe whilst using technology at school and at home.

Part of the lesson included reading about a little boy called Charlie. When we heard about Charlie, we were a little bit worried about him. There were some things we felt that Charlie wasn’t doing correctly, and we thought we could all help him. As we were reading, we decided to draw a sad face on our whiteboard every time we heard something that Charlie has done that we thought was not right.

Well done! We did very well! Now… don’t forget to log on to Wonde at home to review your learning!

An Exciting Discovery!

On our return to school on Wednesday we discovered something completely out of the ordinary. In the outdoor area of our classroom there was a tent with lots of things left inside it… we had no idea where this came from! That was until we found a note hidden in the classroom from a certain somebody explaining everything.

We received a letter from a mystery person called PP. He had left his lots of his belongings with us whilst he visited the research station in Svalbard.

We wrapped up warm and went outside to search through the things PP had left at our school. We discovered a camera, a compass, a hat, scarf and gloves, some food. We were left baffled by who on earth this could be until we put all of our clues together of all the items he had left us to find out that he was in fact a polar explorer and his name was Professor Pole. He has left his things with us whilst he visits the research station in Svalbard.

He left us a video to watch which was very interesting and told us everything!

We studied really hard to figure out why a polar explorer would need the things he had left.

Here are a few ideas we came up with…

  • We thought he needs his hat, scarf and gloves to keep warm as it looked like Professor Pole was exploring somewhere really icy and cold.
  • Professor Pole needs a water bottle to keep himself hydrated and some peanuts to give him some energy whilst he is out exploring.
  • A camera could come in useful for Professor Pole to snap some pictures of anything he may see on his expeditions that he wants to keep.

Next week we will be looking at all the different Polar Regions!

Handwriting

Every day the Toucans practise their handwriting in their handwriting lesson. We focus on watching Miss Hookes model the perfect letter formation and correctly copy into our handwriting books.

Since the beginning of the year we have been learning to join our writing focusing on certain joins each week. We are trying very hard in our lessons! Our teachers remind us to focus on beautiful handwriting all of the time: in Maths, English, Topic and in our homework books too!

Please try to encourage your child to take pride in their handwriting and do their very best each and every time they write.

Enjoying ERIC

Toucans class are really enjoying their ERIC (Enjoying reading in class) lessons. The children have a choice as to whether to read by themselves, share a book with a partner or listen to a story read by Miss Hookes or Mrs Parton-Harris. Year Two get very excited when it’s ERIC time and some Toucan’s have even joined our ERIC after school club! There’s an amazing buzz in the classroom and it’s quite certain the children are getting the reading bug!!

Children have the opportunity to borrow a class library book as well as their reading level book twice a week on a Tuesday and a Thursday which they are taking home to read to and discuss with their parents.
