Discussing our value word – Friendship

Today in Circle Time we focused on our value word – Friendship.

We started with a challenge. Miss Williams gave us word cards with different qualities on. We had to sort them by choosing which qualities go with someone who is a good friend. This started a very sensible discussion about what makes someone a good friend.

We thought about our friends in school and at home and how we choose our friends.

We also thought about the qualities we look for in a friend and how these might be different for each of us. We are all going to try really hard over the rest of the week to be a good friend.

Discussing our value word – Honesty

This month we are focusing on the value word Honesty. We started by thinking about what honesty means. This is what we can up with:

Year Two had a very sensible discussion about honesty during Circle Time this week. We discussed times when we had been honest when we had done something wrong.

In Thursday’s class assembly we read the story of ‘The boy who cried Wolf’. It was about a boy who played a trick and lied so many times that when he was telling the truth and no longer playing a trick, nobody believed him. We discussed this story and decided that…

Honesty is always the best policy.

Discussing our value word – Appreciation

Today in Circle Time we focused more on our value word. We discussed some more examples of what it means to appreciate something. We defined it as someone doing something for us that is kind and we are grateful for. We then went around the circle and shared some examples of times in the last few days that we have been appreciative of someone:

Super appreciation Toucans! Remember to thank all the people you appreciate

Feeling proud

Today we started to focus on our next behaviour for learning: pride. We discussed what it means to be proud and when we might feel proud of ourselves. We then looked at our books with a partner and found a piece of work that we were proud of.

We all found a piece of work we are proud of for lots of different reasons. We are going to continue to try and create pieces of work to be proud of by always writing neatly, setting our work out correctly and trying our very best.

Discussing our value word freedom

In our Circle Time today we started to think about November’s value word – Freedom. Mrs Butterworth showed us some pictures in yesterday’s assembly linking to Freedom and we also enjoyed listening to a song about freedom. Today we started thinking in more detail about what freedom means and how it affects our lives. We shared some ideas about what freedom means to us:

• Being free to go anywhere in our house.
• Being able to choose who we play with.
• Going to the park and running around.
• Making or getting our own snacks.
• Looking after our pets or baby brothers and sisters.
• Going to the beach.

We then started to think about the responsibility that comes with freedom. We discussed being free when we go to the park also means we need to be responsible to ensure we are safe. We also discussed how being free in our houses means we need to be responsible and look after it also.

Our value word – hope

In Circle Time today we thought about how we can take care of the world. This was linking with our value word of hope. We hope our world stays as wonderful as it is for many years to come but we must take responsibility for it. There are things we can do to make sure we do our part. We had a long discussion about recycling and re-using things and Toucans had some great ideas.

We used this website and some children asked if they could access it at home. Here is the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/sysm/eco/flash/flash.shtml

Perseverance in Year 2

IF

As February came to an end we finished our value word of perseverance. We have learnt such a lot over the month about the importance of persevering when things get difficult. We shared our final learning on our jigsaw display as with all our other value words so far this year. We are now looking forward to learning more about Honesty in March but we decided this doesn’t mean an end to persevering!

Black History Month: Mary Seacole

As part of our History lessons we have been learning all about Mary Seacole. We have listened to her story, painted some pictures and written some facts we have learnt. It has linked nicely with our value word of tolerance.

We thought as a class that our lives now are much nicer. We know it is important to learn tolerance and try and get on with people even if they are different to ourselves.

Value word – courage

DSCF0004

In our Circle Time we have been thinking about our value word – courage. We thought of lots of times when we needed to show courage in our every day lives. We talked about the difference between showing courage and putting ourselves in danger. In the Lion King, Mufasa says ‘I am only brave when I need to be’. We liked this quote and it reminded us of times when we have to be brave too. We read a very funny poem about showing courage and then used a writing frame to fill in our own ideas.

We have also read a story that originally came from Japan about a boy called Shobei. They story was called ‘To give is to receive’ and it helped us to think about how this relates to our lives. We came up with some things we need in order to survive, some things we want and some things we wish for. This is what we thought of:

Miss Williams was most impressed with how mature we have become.
