This week, Toucans have enjoyed looking at lots of paintings of the Great Fire of London. The class realised this was another way in which we have learnt about the past. Although the pictures were all of the same scene, they were very different! We talked about which ones looked the most realistic and which were the most effective. Toucans then got to work to make their own interpretation of the same event. They created silhouettes of the roofs by using black card. Well done Toucans! All the pictures on display in our classroom.

Paul Cezanne

Toucans found out all about the French artist Paul Cezanne this afternoon. They realised he was alive during the Victorian time period, which meant he was alive at the same time as Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole!
Toucans thought his work was a bit dull and boring at first but once he began to paint nature, his work became more colourful, warm and cheerful. Karly said he was inspired by nature. The children studied a variety of pictures he had painted with acrylics and watercolours. Did you know he painted 1,300 paintings?!
Using chalk and charcoal

On Friday, Toucans experimented with chalk and charcoal to create their own portraits of Florence Nightingale. They looked at a range of images of Florence beforehand and really enjoyed the lesson.
Primary colours

Today in Art we learnt how to use primary colours to make secondary colours. We learnt that red and blue make purple, yellow and blue make green and red and yellow make orange. We then practiced adding white and black to colours to see what happened. Finally, Miss Williams challenged us to find out which colours would mix to make peach, cream and brown. We thought it was great fun!
Polar bear art

Today in Art we learnt how to draw a polar bear. We concentrated really well! We practiced adding texture and shading.
Paul Cezanne art

Today we painted our pictures in the style of Paul Cezanne. We learnt how to use watercolours and then tried our own.
Rainforest art

Today we learnt about different art that tribes living in the rainforest produce. We learnt that they use the materials of the rainforest to make different sorts of art. They use wood, feathers, body paint and leaves to decorate themselves and their houses. They also make things they can use like baskets and blowpipes.
We learnt they use clay from the ground to make coil pots then we practiced making our own. It was great fun and very messy!
Easter nests

Today we made some delicious Easter nests! We had great fun crushing the shredded week and making our own mixture. We even got to lick the spoon after – YUM!!!
Arctic animal pictures
Today we have had a very arty afternoon! We have been using lots of different media to make arctic animal pictures.

Great Fire of London backgrounds

Today we did some artwork related to the Great Fire of London. We used watercolours to make the flames in the background and we are going to add silhouettes of the houses later in the week.
Primary and secondary colours
Drawing with texture and shading
Today in Art we practiced a learning objective we have focused on before; drawing with texture and shading. Miss Williams taught us how to draw a polar bear focusing on breaking down the shapes. We then tried our own and added detail using lines and dots to add texture. Look at our photos to see how we got on.
Printing our tablecloths

This week we have been very busy preparing for our Healthy Restaurant tomorrow. In our Art lessons we have been learning about printing and we put this new skill to use by making printing tiles to print our own tablecloths. We think they look fabulous!
Pattern printing

Today we explored printing as next week we are printing our own tablecloths for our healthy food restaurant. We experimented with how much paint to use and how to do patterns.
We think printing is fun!
Drawing and painting fruit

In Art this week we have been learning how to draw and paint fruit. We have taken inspiration from Paul Cezanne and Guiseppe Arcimboldo to make our own Art. Look out for our work on display because it is fantastic!
Line drawings

In Art yesterday we learnt how to do a line drawing focusing on size and shape. Today we learnt how to add texture to our drawings by using lines, dots and shading. We explored different textures first and then drew some fruits that had different textures. We tried hard to use the different methods. Some of us even learnt about some new fruit we hadn’t seen before!
Little Masterchef display

Our Little Masterchef display is finally finished in our classroom! We worked really hard on our portraits and made a frame from pasta. We think they look fantastic!
Welcome Toucans!

Today we had a wonderful day welcoming our new Toucans. We starter by sharing our news and things we were looking forward to. Our teachers were very impressed with how good we were at listening!
This afternoon we started some self-portraits for our masterchef gallery display. We started by having a close look at ourselves in the mirror. We learnt some skills we needed for drawing our faces then had a go ourselves. Some of us started to use pastels to colour them in. They are going to look fantastic when they are finished!
Painting our clay pots

Today we finished our clay pots by painting them. We think they look wonderful!
Clay oil pots

Today we made clay coil pots, just like they do in the rainforest! We learnt a lot about how to roll and joining clay making ‘slip’. It was also great fun!
