In English we have been learning about the editing toolkit and the importance of checking our own work. Mr Lo turned us all into OLIVER. We had to be Oliver and mark Oliver’s work. Well done Toucans. You worked hard in spotting the errors and then correcting them with our purple pen!
We learn from our mistakes and that’s why we sometimes make them!
Mr Lo would like us all to be responsible both in school and at home! We need to look after our belongings and help around at home!

Don’t forget in Toucans we are expected to read for at least 10 minutes a day at home. We can update our reading diaries (also known as reading records) by ourselves or we can ask our adults for help. Remember we can include all reading including reading subtitles on TV, reading a leaflet through the post, reading what’s on our cereal boxes and reading books of our faith.
Today we enjoyed the start of our new class reader, Oliver’s vegetables . We looked at the front cover , discussed the author , illustrator and publisher. We then read the story. We enjoyed listening to Oliver trying carrots, spinach , rhubarb , cabbage , beetroot and peas !
Later in the term we will look forward to writing our own version of the story.
Today we enjoyed our whole class reading. We talked about how saying “blank” when we don’t know a word is very useful. It helps us keep on reading. When we read a whole sentence, we might even be able to guess the word!
This half term in DT we have been working towards making ourselves a cushion for our ERIC sessions. We enjoyed researching different types of cushions and then designed our own.
Mrs Parton-Harris taught us how to sew using a running stitch. It was very tricky! We had to persevere really well to complete our cushions. We stuffed them with wadding and decorated them by following our designs. We are very proud of our finished products!
In our English lessons, we have been enjoying the story of The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. This story is set in the rainforest which we have been learning lots of facts about.
We have been revising how to write direct speech through using speech bubbles. Look how neatly we have presented our work!
Over the last few weeks, Toucans have been working extremely hard on producing their own books! They enjoyed reading books by Hans deBeer about the character of Lars the polar bear. They have now written their own stories using Lars as their main character. They drafted their story, edited, improved and then finally published it – just like real authors do!
Toucans took their books into our Reception class and read them to our Swans. Swans really enjoyed looking at their illustrations and hearing their stories.
Well done Toucans – you should feel very proud of yourselves.
This term, Toucans have thoroughly enjoyed reading Hans deBeer’s books about the little polar bear called Lars. This week they finished writing their own book about Lars which they then worked hard to edit and improve. They then published their story into a book and illustrated it. They were extremely proud of the results! Even more exciting news is that next week we are going to read them to our Reception class.

In our reading lessons we have been learning about sequencing and summarising. As part of this unit of work, we explored features of factual books. We learnt that not all factual book have these features but many of them have at least a few.
In English this week we have been reading books about a little polar bear called Lars. Lars is a mischievous little bear who always goes on a journey and ends up having adventures! Today we role played a conversation he might have had with his friend Hugo the hare. We had some excellent ideas for what they might have said to each other. Some of us were even brave enough to perform for the rest of the class.

Every day Toucans practise their handwriting in their handwriting lesson.
Last week at school it was World Book Week. On Tuesday we were able to bring in our favourite books from home to share with our class or we could choose our favourite book from the class library. Our choices ranged from the Wonkey Donkey all the way to Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone! We had so much fun sharing our most loved books with everyone in our class.
On Thursday, on the official world book day, we were visited by amazing author T.M Jorden. We began the day with an assembly where Tim introduced us to the process of writing a book. He introduced us to Lord Ted, one of the main characters in his book. We were given a challenge for the morning to create a new character for Tim’s next book!
Friday was dress up day – have a look at some of the words we decided to dress up as. Miss Hookes was puzzled with all her jigsaw pieces attached to her and Miss Williams was dressed up as imagination! We had a variety of different words and characters from Year 2, they included strong, stealthy, colourful and magic! We also had some wonderful costumes of book characters such as Harry and Hermione and Mad Hatter!
We all had such a wonderful week celebrating all things books!

This week Year two were introduced to our 2022 Eric challenge! Toucans were given their new reading passport to complete. They have plenty of time to complete it and were told there was absolutely no rush.
During Eric on Friday the children were challenged to complete one task from their passport which was to read a non-fiction book that they didn’t know anything about. Year Two then needed to write a review about what they had read, learnt and why other children need to read their book! We all learnt lots of facts about different things – it was a great challenge! This week Toucan’s class have been comparing different sets of instructions aiming to find which one would be best to follow. Year 2 did an amazing job spotting great instructions and followed them to make their very own Toucan mask! With a lot of perseverance and a little help, the Toucans made their amazing masks. Can you spot who’s behind the mask?
