This week we have been looking at Biographies. We look forward to writing a biography about Florence Nightingale later. Today we wanted to improve our confidence in speaking. We worked in groups and role-played interviewing Florence Nightingale. Lots of us did really well although we all got a bit camera shy when Mr Lo started filming!

Today we went to the school library. Many of us borrowed a book to take home. Don’t forget to update your wonderful reading in your reading record.

We have now learnt our first full story using Talk for Writing. We have learnt the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed learning it.
In our grammar lesson we explored using a comma. We looked at example shopping list and also discussed where does and go.

We can also review our learning on Edshed. Mr Lo has assigned a new commas in a list activity.

In English this half term we have started our topic, “traditional tales”. We have looked closely at the story of Little Red Riding hood and discussed why there are many versions. Throughout the week we will be writing sentences, making sure we use capital letters and full stops , adding conjunctions and expanding our vocabulary. We have already looked at the words, crimson, rapidly, azure and around.
In spellings we will be looking at the year 2 common exception words, poor, floor, door, because and find. We will also continue reviewing our phonics knowledge and applying our skills for dictation.

In Phonics we have looked at alternative graphemes (letters) for the short-vowel phonemes and applying the best-fit-rules in words.

This week we have enjoyed reading a range of food poems. We have looked at the rhyming words and also had a go at writing similes.
Toucans are now familiar with the features of instruction writing. They have a title, sub-titles, bullet points or numbered lists. They use imperative verbs and some adverbs.
Today we started our new writing project. First we discussed what is the correct way to brush out teeth.

We then worked in pairs listening and giving instructions on how to brush your teeth.

We look forward to putting our ideas onto pen and paper this week.
Today in phonics we recapped all the learning we have done so far. We were very proud of ourselves as we remembered a lot ! Many of us were also able to write an example word For each phoneme .

Today Toucans tried their best to demonstrate their understanding of writing instructions. Look at their wonderful publications.

Look at our wonderful work with imperative verbs.
We then went on to write a set of instructions on how to wash your hands.
In English we have been learning about imperative verbs (bossy verbs)
How many imperative verbs can you spot in the video below?
We also looked at existing instructions to identify the features. Some of us even spotted features that were on some but missing on others! Excellent spotting!
Finally as a class we came up with our own success criteria on how to write instructions.
In the morning we had a wonderful morning circle-time check in.
In the afternoon we enjoyed the sun, fresh air and reading aloud.
Mr Lo first read out a piece of writing to us. It was instructions.
We when followed the instructions

We then listened to Mr Lo read another piece of writing. This time it was telling us what we did. It was in the past tense.
Today we then talked about how instructions are written in the present tense ( now).
We reviewed our understanding of verbs by doing
Today I play, Yesterday I played!
Today I bake, Yesterday I baked!
We also discussed how some verbs are tricky.
Today I run, Yesterday I ran!
In English we have been talking about “super sentences”. They start with a capital letter and end with a “.” or “?” or “!”.
We then talked about how adjectives are describing words. To get creative we looked at each other and thought of a sentence to describe each other.
We look forward to improving our writing by using super sentences with adjectives.
